A couple of days ago, news went viral about Islamic State militants destroying a collection of priceless statues and sculptures in Iraq dating back thousands of years and blowing up the Mosul Public Library, sending 10,000 books and more than 700 rare manuscripts up in flames. “Extremists” used sledgehammers and power drills to smash ancient artwork as they rampaged through a museum in the northern city of Mosul. This was once the castle of Salahuddine, the cemetery where prophet Yunis is buried and where thousands of tombs, church remnants and a few hundred monuments and murals were once laid.
This was all under the pretense that these statues and sculptures promoted idolatry.
Is it surprising to see what these ignorant men have done? Is it surprising that they are destroying all what the Hittites, Sumerians, Babylonians and Chaldeans had achieved in the name of development, advancement, urbanization, civilization and artistic creativity?
What are these people trying to do-rewrite history?
They have managed to destroy almost all aspects of human progress. They are trying to erase cultural traces, across human history, legacies of people who were once creative, whether in science, culture or art- traces that remain a witness to this land and its people who have coexisted despite their different ethnicities.
This destruction of all records of past eras could mean one thing and that is to eliminate any long-standing proof that any group or state, or almost life, existed before the creation of the Islamic State. This is pure insanity from a group of armed ignorant people who proved to be nothing but fanatic bigots who resort to bloodshed and violence as their ultimate source of existence.
But what about the reports that say most of these statues and sculptures were moved after the US invasion to a museum in Baghdad? It makes all the videos circled around about ISIS destruction “theatrical”, as if all these “cinematic” performances were nothing but a game of destruction- a game determined to divide & conquer by spreading fear and violence; a game planned to destroy the history of one of the largest nations to populate this earth; a plan to eradicate evidence dating thousands of years!
The physical destruction of cities and the psychological destruction of people represent the best laud plans orchestrated by the West to achieve all benefits it wishes to achieve in our region. Therefore, isn’t one allowed to wonder about the possibility of the United States having “created” ISIS?
When asked who the United States would prefer to come out as winner from the Iraqi-Iranian war in the late 80’s, Henry Kissinger answered that his country’s policy aimed at defeating both together. This answer summarizes the exact view of the United States towards our countries and region.
Then, why are we still surprised that the United States is actually happy with all the destruction happening in Syria and Iraq? And why are we still surprised that the international coalition, which is a big scam, is not achieving any significant military gains in order to defeat the so-called “terrorists”?
What has been so far destroyed by the newly- born “Islamic State” is much large in volume and deep in impact on people’s minds. Arab dignity has been abdolutely compromised.
Arabs have lost the will to condemn and enthusiasm to retaliate. They have acquired loser traits, convinced that their bad fate is what they truly deserve. For years, Arab regimes have planted in their citizens’ heads the mentality of “defeat”. They worked hard to suppress, enslave and exploit their people to satisfy their personal interests rather than promote the advancement of their societies, by educating their people and developing their countries. They kept people silent by means of bribery and terrorized them with the “vacancy in ruling” and “radical Islam” rhetoric whenever the thought of changing a ruler or a regime came up.
What is happening today is not only a result of the continuous Western planning and intervention in our region to keep Arabs & Muslims from uniting, but it is also the result of the seeds our corrupt leaders and regimes have been planting for the past 50 years!!
Somehow, we always keep forgetting valuable historical lessons. We manage to neglect what has happened and repeat the same mistakes again. This is partly so because the majority of the Arab population doesn’t have the propensity to think about change- changing regimes while striving to feed and shelter their families. That is the policy most Arab regimes used to control their people in fear of losing all the wealth and power.
This is also partly so because, for the past 50 or 60 years, a big controversy continues to be unsettled regarding the identity of the people living in this region. People of different ethnicities denied their cultural legacy and refused to accept that they constituted a substantial element of this region. Instead, they left and sought refuge in other countries they considered safe.
Societies have been living an identity crisis. With no power to remove oppressive regimes, people either surrendered or escaped. The few who fought were either killed or incarcerated.
People were disappointed and defeated. They have abandoned all causes. All they can do is use words to express their feelings while they lie in utter ignorance, poverty and restraint.
In my opinion, the region has been fighting with its own identity for the past years.
Noam Chomsky says, “Historical amnesia is a very dangerous phenomenon, not only because it undermines moral and intellectual integrity, but also because it lays the groundwork for crimes that lie ahead”.
Could this be an accurate representation of the charade the so-called ISIS is “performing”?
